Fun with Melanie!
I was very excited to see my cousin Melanie. It has been probably 10 years since I've seen her in person.
Our first activity of the day Tuesday was to go to Bathebara Historical Village. Winston-Salem was mostly settled by the Moravians.
I think they are closely related to Germans. They were very forward thinking about women & voting rights. Also, they believed women should go to college. They started the Salem Womens College.
These are some of the buildings we saw first. They are from late 1700's through the 1800's.
Steve was the historian for the day.
While Melanie was at an appointment, Steve & I drove through Old Salem. Melanie was not sure about their religion, but they do have Easter Sunrise Service.
These were taken out the window so they are a little crooked!
Our next sightseeing adventure in Winston Salem was the shell station. This was an actual shop you could walk into back in the day.
Then there is the giant coffee pot.
went to Reynolda Village. The owner was RJ Reynolds owner of Reynolds Tobacco.
They built & moved into the house in 1817.
Katherine his wife did a lot of gardening. She
grew many vegetables & fruits. She taught many how to grow effectively. She also developed a dairy farm so effective that the milk was used throughout the community.
TB developed in cows & could be passed to people. The state asked her to fill in for the milk shortage.
You can see the house back in the trees.
Here is the wildlife. I think Melanie said it is a rat snake.
Our last stop was the Reynolda Tavern for a good dinner.
Wednesday we did the things you have to do while Melanie was working. We did the laundry & went grocery shopping.
We got together later in the evening & had dinner at her house. I even got to talk on Face Time to a cousin I never met. It was tough saying goodbye but we have hopes when Covid is over that she will come to Utah.
Wonderful visit!!! The pics are awesome - you really should pursue photography & yes I’d ❤️to come out ❤️😊. Melanie
