Hyannis/Cape Cod
Before we left Rhode Island, we had two cemeteries to check out & two churches.
One of the Seventh Day Baptist Churches.
Family, A Region and It's Roots, By James H Allyn, Copyright 1980, Page 50-51:
CLARKE. Joseph Clarke [11] was one of the four brothers who came to Portsmouth in 1638, and the only one to leave children. He and his wife Margaret had ten, six of them boys. While his older brother John was spending thirteen years in London getting a charter for Rhode Island, Joseph became the spiritual leader of the community, and one of the founders of the Seventh-Day Baptist Church in Newport. Later he was the first pastor of the church in Hopkinton, later Westerly. For seven year she was Governor's Assistant from Newport, and for two more years from Westerly. He was also Deputy for several years, dying in office at the age of seventy-two
We had a long trip over to Cape Cod with an ice cream break at McDonalds & a stop at Walmart. It is a long way up & our campground is only halfway!
Thursday, May 26th
We drove back down the cape to Hyannis. I know many of you were not a fan of Kennedy but my parents were & so have I been. I was only 11 when he died.
There was a room dedicated to Robert Kennedy. He was assassinated 5 years after his brother.
Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968 also.
We walked a bit down the main street of Hyannis.
The town square used to be where the schools were. The Indian was Sachem. He helped the new arrivals (pilgrims)
We went out to the JFK Memorial. It is done like the Kennedy half dollar. I have never seen so many geese.!
We spent an hour or so tracking down the Kennedy Compound. The roads are closed off. I finally found a partial vantage point. This was the Joseph Kennedy compound.
We went to see the Seagull Beach lighthouse which was little & far away. Tomorrow we see four so I hope they're bigger & accessible!
We were hopeful to find Desire Howland & John Gorham's gravestone in Cobb's Hill Cemetery. These were both children born in Plymouth of Mayflower parents, who got married. No luck but there is a stone there per find a grave.
We had a nice dinner at Tap City Grill & stopped for an ice cream cone, at a home made ice cream store.
