Chocolate & Trains

 Saturday

We headed out to Hershey, PA. The place is huge! Besides the factory, amusement park, & Hershey's Farm which is in Lancaster County, they had the giant Chocolate World attractions & gift shop.

They have several different attractions you can choose from. They have "Hershey's Unwrapped," which is a chocolate tasting tour. They have Make Your Own Candy Bar & Reese's Stuff Your Cup. We opted out of those because of Steve's Diabetes & my fatness!

We went on the "Chocolate Tour". 🍫 You ride in a car & it takes you through the virtual factory where you learn about how they make all that rich chocolate. Some of the equipment is real. The actual factory is down the road.

The other attraction was the 4 D movie. It was cute.  We did each get a piece of chocolate after each attraction. We skipped the gift shop.

I had planned to go to the Amish Central Market for lunch & shopping. However, when we hit the Lancaster Old Town the roads were congested, &  there was an accident. By the time we navigated the one way roads with our trailer, & finally found the parking lot, it was full. We had about 15 minutes till they closed at 3pm.

We just got some lunch & stopped to do laundry. We got to the campground near 6pm. The roads all over Lancaster County seemed to be little 2 lane rambling farm roads!! It was raining & they were curvy!

Sunday, we went to church in Lancaster & they were so friendly, it was amazing!! After church we headed for brunch at the Speckled Hen. Popular place using locally sourced foods. We had to wait close to an hour to get our food!

This is the reason cars must be slow. These buggies are everywhere!

Speaking of Amish, we went to the Amish House & Farm for a tour & to learn about their way of life.

The house.

The parlor. There is not a church. They go to a different house every other Sunday for services. Women sit on one side. Men on the other. They use battery operated lamps. They use propane to run appliances. They teach & study the German Bible. The children strictly learn reading, writing & arithmetic. They learn German & a lot of them also speak Dutch.

This was the kitchen & dining

This is an old stove that used coal. Now they use gas stoves & refrigerators.

A daughter's room. They wear black aprons during the week & white aprons on Sunday. Once they get married they don't wear white aprons, I think.

The boys room. The outfits when they are little & the suits when they are older. The teenagers are encouraged to attend youth gatherings. They can't marry their cousins.
They go to school till about 15. When the boy gets married, he grows a beard & never cuts or trims it.

A baby boys room. Notice the straw hats! All men & boys wear straw hats. Notice the toys in the 2 pictures.

Parents room

Blacksmith tools used in farming & also to repair their buggies. They use battery operated lights for turn signals,  brake lights, flashing lights  on back of the carriage, & head lights.

The Amish don't drink or smoke. However, they process tobacco & distill alcohol & sell those as cash crops.

Down on the farm. The Amish have many big growing concerns. They may own up to 70% of farms in Lancaster County. They have big dairy farms, wheat, barley, tobacco & probably more. The women make all the things they sell in gift shops or markets.  Goat Soap, lotions &  soy candles are just a few. They also have many farm animals.

Last was the Choo Choo Barn.  It had the biggest toy train set up ever.

These are teens at a fancy restaurant for their prom. Notice the formals & the limos.

This was the zoo.

A softball game.
Some sort of performance or program. There was even a small band playing in the bandstand to the right.

This looks like a typical farm home.

3 ring circus

Amusement park

An Amish Barn raising. Notice the horse buggies. Women are preparing food.

A business. I liked the windmill! Lancaster County was actually founded by the Pennsylvania Dutch.

A ski lodge & skiers coming down the mountain toward the back & Steve said they were ice skating beside the lodge.

This was so cute. They are laying asphalt. The vehicles  goes back & forth in the slot.
This is the end of 2 days.
