Wright Bros. & A Century of Flight

Sunday morning we drove up Island to Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills & Kitty Hawk. We went to church in Nags Head. It is much busier at the North End of the Island. We were hoping for a brunch but 2 places right next to each other had no parking. It's especially hard when the trailer is behind us.

We headed for the Wright Brothers Museum at the NPS Visitor Center. A ranger cornered us & wanted to know all about our little trailer. It often is the subject of conversation wherever we go.

The Museum was very well done. There were inspiring thoughts along with stories of their struggles.

I'm letting the displays do the talking. I hope you can enlarge the pics to read about the amazing history.

A few family pics

Outside on the hill was the Monument.

The City donated the plane for the Monument as well as the statues. Look close in the background, more statues of people watching the flight.

Then we went up north a little more to see the Monument to a Century of Flight. This was pretty amazing. Each pillar had several dates (chronological) of every person from the Wright's onward to the last few years. This included Russian accomplishments. It included the space shuttles & the space station. The rockets, the planes, etc.

This poem by John McGee is very beautiful & famous. The guy died shortly after writing it.

I stuck my hand out the window to take a few more pics of "Island" style architecture.

We drove down to Bodie Island Lighthouse.

All lighthouses are supposed to be different. Hatteras had candy stripes or barber pole stripes. Bodie has straight around stripes.

There were 3 different Lighthouse Keepers to share their work. Some brought families.

There have been 3 lighthouses built here. The 2nd being destroyed by the Confederates.

We headed to our new campsite at Oregon Inlet & Steve even got to take a late nap!

I am going to send this blog & work on a new one when I do laundry tomorrow.
