Nuclear Science, Buried Cadillacs & a Giant Cowboy

Howdy Ya' All from Texas!

We left Albuquerque about 11:00 which is way late for the long drive to Amarillo. (About 6 hrs.)

First we went to the Nuclear Science Museum. Very interesting!! There is a lot to see & we took too long but oh well!

Fat Man, the bomb dropped on Japan

This was literally the first type of a Nuclear device. An actual bomb. They tested this device on old bleachers at a college ball field in Chicago.

Little Boy, the other bomb dropped on Japan

Supplies from a fallout shelter.

This is the type of storage container they put the Nuclear waste in to transport.

Very interesting story behind Snoopy & Charlie Brown. With the first Apollo accident, they wanted to make sure everyone was being very careful & not making mistakes that could put astronauts in jeopardy. So they made Snoopy the Safety Officer Representative.

Apollo 10 named the Command Ship Charlie Brown & the Rover Snoopy. This was the dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 Moon walk. They made sure the rover could get back to the ship.

We drove about 2 hours down the road to Santa Rosa. We checked out the Blue Hole. I guess this is a pretty famous swimming hole on Route 66 It is very deep & you can jump off the ledge. It was 61 degrees so no!

Next was the Route 66 Auto Museum. It had a lot of cars & a lot of memorabilia.

A short stop in Tucumcari for a Route 66 sign, the famous Blue Swallow Motel & a pizza.

By the time we hit Cadillac Ranch, it was too dark to see. I am attaching a photo  taken by someone else. Everybody spray paints them.

Right down the road was the 2nd Amendment Cowboy.

Driving out to Palo Duro Canyon was not a fun experience but we got there. It was about a 6 hour drive from Albuquerque but not much in between. We also lost an hour when we hit Texas so it was 9:30pm

We had picked up a pizza, because as many of you know, it is a weekly event! We warmed it up in the microwave & went to bed.

We woke up to an incredible day of  blue skies & warm!!! We were able to eat outside for all our meals.

We took a small hike, went to the Trading Post (for my daily Dr. Pepper!) We went to a bird observation "hide". We napped, I organized & did 10 minutes of chores. It was so good to have a day without travel!

The backdrop from our neighbors campsite.

  We bbq'd chicken.
We decided to do s'mores but there are fire restrictions & it seems a lot to get down our propane fireplace so thank goodness for microwaves!
Good night!
