Acadians & Armadillos

We left Alexandria Monday am, stopping at Lafayette. We saw Larc's Acadian Village. The story is of the Acadians who came from France & settled in the Nova Scotia area. However, when the English took the area of Nova Scotia they had settled in, the British burned their homes & everything they had to the ground. Some went back to France, I think some went to the Maine area & some came down to the New Orleans area. This was before the Louisiana Purchase. Louisiana had very much of a French influence.

The homes typically had two doors, one to the kitchen dining area & one to the master bedroom. There sometimes was a loft for sleeping.  
Sometimes a second bedroom. They had beautiful paintings chronicling  their lives.

 We said goodbye to Shenandoah & set off for Winchester, Virginia. It is one of the oldest towns. We stopped first at George Washington's office.  The town was founded about 1752. George Washington surveyed the town. Soon after  he joined the military. There was a lot of trouble with Indians. George planned & provided help with building Fort Loudoun in 1755-1756. George served as a Colonel during this time. He used the small office while the fort was being built. The French-Indian War lasted from 1754-1763. We couldn't take pics inside due to some 1 of a kind artifacts in the museum These photos are from the city of Winchester. The fort was torn down after the war was over. A lot of the wood was used in building the town. We went to Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters.  The interesting thing about this house was that it belonged to Mary Tyler Moore's Great Grandfather. Lighthouses & Falls, Duluth to Wisconsin

 Thursday, June 9th We drove in to Duluth to go to the Lake Superior Maritime Museum. I got a bonus on lighthouses. 3 of them right there. This one is my favorite, Superior Entry Lighthouse. This one is North Breakwater Lighthouse. This one is South Breakwater. We watched the bridge lift up for a big tour boat. What a cute little tugboat boat! Lake Superior The Museum Exhibits. A sample of a few ship cabins There are 2 narrow canals in the harbor. Inside, one of the displays was the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Do you remember the Gordon Lightfoot song of the same name? The song was done in 1976. There was another of many crashes of ships & this one was on a clear day. After lunch we headed for Wisconsin. My original plan was to go to Wisconsin Dells & ride a duck boat. We were also going to go to see where my Dad's side of the family, the Clark's  ended up after Connecticut & Massachusetts.
