Buck Atom, Mater's Station & a Blue Whale
We headed into Tulsa to Cyrus Avery Centennial plaza. It shares the vision of the past meets the future. The flags are of all the Route 66 states. Horses vs auto.
The bridge also represented where east meets west for Route 66 & also where the city of Tulsa & the western oil fields connected.
This is the Arkansas River.
Next to two famous statues. The first is the
Oil Driller.
The other is Buck Atom. Buck was a rodeo cowboy who got pulled up in space & saw how beautiful Route 66 was. He came back & made it his calling to help bring Route 66 back to it's former glory. We now have our own little Buck Atom riding on our dashboard.
A pretty church & another famous sign.
We moved on down the road to see the Blue Whale of Catoosa. Imagine you have been in the hot car & your kids are cranky. Think what a great place this was as a stopover on the Route.
Everyone could go for a swim or dive off the tail. There was a snack bar & tables for picnics.
Continuing ever eastward we visited Totem Pole Park.
Ed Galloway retired & decided to make a memorial to the Indians. He did most of these out of concrete & neighbors would drop off paint to him.
Amazingly he also created all these fiddles out of different types of wood. However did he have time?
And a beautiful table top.
& this picture.
We got a campsite next to the Spring River
We started today at Baxter Springs Kansas with this cute gas station shot
The Rainbow Bridge is one of the few remaining bridges that can be driven on.
Up the road a ways was the Riverton Market
which was original to the Route.
Next stop was Kan-O-Tex service station along with Mater & all the gang!
I'm sure your grandkids may get a kick out of those!
Funny thing yesterday when we just got to Kansas, the song "Somewhere over the Rainbow by
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
happened to play on my cd.
"DOROTHY WE AREN'T IN KANSAS ANYMORE! " I always wanted to use that line!!
Now we are in Missouri. We stopped to see Grand Falls. Not very grand but ok.
Steve went in to visit the beautiful cars at the Route 66 Auto Museum. I worked on my blog, thus no photos! He enjoyed it as all guys do!!
We had a picnic outside the car this time!
It's called the Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park.
We headed out of Springfield Missouri & down to Branson. Looking forward to our day in Branson tomorrow.
We are camping at Table Rock Lake.
Awesome pictures you guys. I really enjoy reading your blog. We've seen a lot of the same places on our way to Kansas to visit our grandkids. Stay safe and keep having fun.
